- The rules package took effect for the 2026 season on Sept. 5, 2026 and preserves automatic ejection for targeting while removing an automatic next-game suspension for a first offense.
- Under the trial, a second targeting in a season carries a suspension for the first half of the next game and a third targeting triggers a full-game suspension with conferences able to seek an appeal after a second call.
- Officials must still confirm targeting on video replay and replay procedures were changed so coaches can challenge by using a timeout and teams receive two challenges with a possible third if one is won.
- Other changes now in force include a Fair Catch Kick option for an uncontested field-goal attempt, offensive pass-interference reduced from 15 to 10 yards, stricter scrimmage-kick numbering, expanded helmet communications, and permission to use protective gear like Guardian Caps.
- Rulemakers say the trial prioritizes player safety while reducing carryover disqualifications and that conferences, officials and replay centers will track in-season data to decide whether to keep, tweak, or drop the changes after the year ends.
