NCAA Sets Single Jan. 2–16 Transfer Portal Window, Tightens Coaching-Change Exception

The move concentrates transfer activity in January to curb roster churn during postseason and spring.

Overview

  • Division I’s Administrative Committee approved a 15‑day portal window for 2026 running Jan. 2–16 for FBS and FCS players, with finalization expected after the meetings conclude Wednesday.
  • Players on teams that play postseason games on or after Jan. 12 get a consecutive five‑day period beginning the day after their final game to file portal notification, which would cover CFP title‑game participants Jan. 20–24.
  • The coaching‑change exception now grants a 15‑day entry period beginning five days after a new head coach is hired or announced, replacing the prior immediate 30‑day window and taking effect immediately.
  • Programs that already changed coaches this season, including Arkansas, Oklahoma State, UCLA and Virginia Tech, are grandfathered under the previous 30‑day rule.
  • The spring transfer window has been eliminated, student‑athlete feedback prompted the 15‑day length, and reactions range from broad coaching support to Big Ten objections and warnings of potential antitrust challenges.
