NCAA Panels Propose 15-Day Post–Final Four Transfer Windows for Division I Basketball

The Division I Cabinet will review the measure in January for potential April 2026 implementation.

Overview

  • Under the proposal, the women’s window would run April 6–20 and the men’s April 7–21, replacing the current 30-day period that opens after the second round.
  • The committees said shifting the timing to after the championships would give teams that advance deep into March the same portal opportunity as those eliminated earlier.
  • A new coaching-change process would give players five days to meet a newly hired staff followed by a 15-day period to request entry into the portal.
  • If no head coach is hired within 30 days of a departure, a 15-day portal window would begin on day 31, while in-season changes after Jan. 1 would push entries to the April window.
  • The move follows football’s recent reforms and continues a multi-year contraction of basketball’s transfer windows from 60 days to 45, then 30, and now a proposed 15.
