NCAA Moves Basketball Transfer Portal to 15-Day Window After Title Games

The change is designed to keep portal activity out of March Madness to restore focus on competition.

Overview

  • Effective immediately, the 2026 women’s window will run April 6–20 and the men’s window April 7–21, opening the day after each championship game.
  • A 15-day portal period tied to coaching changes will begin five days after a new head coach is hired, or on day 31 if no hire is announced within 30 days.
  • Midyear basketball transfers who enrolled at an NCAA school in the first academic term are ineligible to compete at a second school that season.
  • Other sports saw adjustments including men’s wrestling moving to a 30-day window starting April 1, men’s ice hockey shifting to a 15-day window beginning the Monday after its title game, and removal of the indoor track window.
  • The Division I Business Session added postseason performance units for championship-game participants and champions, with 2026 tournament funds paid to conferences in 2027 under existing multi-year distribution schedules.
