NCAA Finalizes Single Jan. 2–16 Transfer Window for College Football

The change aims to curb roster churn by replacing two windows with one tightly timed period.

Overview

  • The Division I Administrative Committee approved a unified Jan. 2–16 transfer-notification window starting in 2026 for FBS and FCS players.
  • Players on teams that play a postseason game on or after Jan. 12 will have a consecutive five-day period after their final game to enter the portal.
  • The spring transfer window is eliminated, consolidating all transfer entries into one offseason window.
  • After head-coaching changes, players now get a 15-day window beginning five days after a new coach is hired or announced, with those already affected this season still covered by the prior 30-day rule.
  • The window length was extended from a proposed 10 days to 15 following athlete feedback, while some stakeholders, including the Big Ten and Ohio State’s Ryan Day, have voiced opposition and legal challenges are being discussed.
