NC House Forms Bipartisan Panel to Probe Rep. Cecil Brockman, Weigh Expulsion

Brockman remains jailed on a $1.05 million bond ahead of a Nov. 3 court appearance.

Overview

  • Speaker Destin Hall named a 12-member bipartisan committee co-chaired by John Bell, Brenden Jones and Robert Reives to investigate the allegations and consider an expulsion recommendation.
  • Brockman was removed from all House committee assignments as the select committee begins its work.
  • The High Point Democrat was arrested Oct. 8 on two counts of statutory sex offense with a child and two counts of indecent liberties with a child, and he has not resigned or publicly commented.
  • Prosecutors say the alleged victim is 15, claim Brockman met the teen via an app and appeared in videos found on the teen’s phone, and describe tracking via an app, a 911 call and an attempted entry into an emergency room during a multi-agency probe.
  • Any expulsion process is expected to take months based on past precedent, and a vacancy would be filled by a gubernatorial appointee recommended by Guilford County Democrats, with Brockman’s absence already affecting close vote calculations on veto overrides.
