N.C. Driver Charged in Crash That Killed Catawba Goalkeeper, Girlfriend Held on $5 Million Bond

A judge set the high bond after prosecutors described strong impairment evidence plus a prior DWI case dismissed with leave.

Overview

  • Juan Alvarado Aguilar, 37, is charged with two counts of felony death by vehicle and driving while impaired, as well as driving without a valid license.
  • State Highway Patrol investigators say his pickup crossed the center line on Jan. 16 on Amity Hill Road in Rowan County and hit a Honda head-on, killing Fletcher Harris, 20, and Skylar Provenza, 19.
  • Troopers reported a powerful odor of alcohol, observed Aguilar stumbling at the scene, and obtained a hospital blood draw as part of the crash investigation.
  • Jail and court records indicate he is being held at the Rowan County Detention Center, is subject to an ICE detainer after a Mexican passport was found, and is scheduled to return to court on March 2.
  • Prosecutors told the court Aguilar previously missed two court dates and has a 2020 DWI listed as dismissed with leave, factors cited in arguing for tight pretrial controls.
