NBEMS Slashes NEET-PG Cut-Offs for Third Counselling Round to Fill Vacant PG Seats

A health ministry directive lowers eligibility to the 0th percentile for some categories to prevent thousands of training slots from going unused.

Overview

  • Revised qualifying thresholds are now the 7th percentile for general/EWS, the 5th percentile for general PwBD, and the 0th percentile for SC, ST and OBC candidates.
  • Because NEET-PG uses negative marking, the reserved-category cut-off corresponds to a score of minus 40 out of 800.
  • Officials say the move aims to make enough candidates available to fill more than 9,000 unoccupied postgraduate seats across roughly 65,000–70,000 positions.
  • NBEMS emphasized that exam ranks and scores are unchanged, eligibility is only for counselling participation, and admissions remain provisional pending document and MBBS/FMGE mark verification.
  • The relaxation followed an IMA representation to health minister JP Nadda, while some doctors criticised the step as diluting merit, with warnings about effects on training and patient care.
