NBC Sets Four Sunday ‘Tonight Show’ Episodes After ‘Sunday Night Football’ This Fall

The network is trying to lift late-night viewership by funneling the NFL’s massive audience into Jimmy Fallon’s franchise.

Overview

  • Special editions are scheduled for Sept. 21, Oct. 26, Nov. 16 and Dec. 7, airing after local news following Sunday Night Football.
  • Two of the lead-ins feature the Kansas City Chiefs, with other games including PackersSteelers and Lions–Eagles.
  • The Sept. 21 show lists Matthew McConaughey and Eric Church as guests, with additional lineups to be announced.
  • NBC will also air a regular episode after the NFL Kickoff game on Sept. 4, returning the show to five nights in those weeks.
  • Executives say the aim is to capture SNF’s audience, which averaged about 21.6 million viewers last season, building on a post-SNF episode that delivered Fallon’s best ratings last year and alongside NBC’s contracts with Fallon and Seth Meyers through 2028.
