NBC News Eliminates About 150 Jobs as MSNBC, CNBC Shift to Versant

The company is steering affected staff to roughly 140 open roles during a pivot to subscriptions and sports.

Overview

  • Termination notices went out Wednesday to about 150 employees, representing roughly 7%–8% of NBC News’ newsroom and about 2% of the broader News Group.
  • The reductions are tied to the Versant spinoff that separates MSNBC and CNBC from NBC News, with NBC journalists set to halt appearances on MSNBC on Oct. 20 and a rebrand to MS NOW planned for November.
  • Impacted employees are receiving 60 days’ notice, severance, and outplacement services, and many are being encouraged to apply for approximately 140 active openings, with about a dozen eliminated roles repurposed as new jobs.
  • Chairman Cesar Conde has outlined a paid NBC News subscription service targeted for later this year, expanded sports coverage in partnership with NBC Sports, and a forthcoming marketing campaign.
  • Multiple outlets reported the dissolution of dedicated identity verticals including NBC BLK, NBC Latino, NBC Asian America, and NBC OUT, with related coverage to be integrated across the newsroom.
