Overview
- The Andhra Pradesh Biodiversity Board will use the funds to raise saplings for distribution to farmers under the Trees Outside Forests programme.
- The money has been drawn from Access and Benefit Sharing fees collected from users of Red Sanders under the Biological Diversity Act.
- Biodiversity Management Committees and local and tribal communities will participate in nursery development, planting and long-term care, supporting employment and stewardship.
- The Environment Ministry said the NBA has previously released over ₹31.55 crore to the state forest department for Red Sanders protection.
- The species is endemic to the Southern Eastern Ghats, faces persistent smuggling pressure, and is protected under India’s wildlife law and listed in CITES.
