NBA Approves Heave Rule, Removing Stat Penalty on End-of-Quarter Long Shots

The change takes effect next season to encourage more buzzer attempts by counting qualifying misses as team tries.

Overview

  • Under the rule, a shot launched from at least 36 feet in the final three seconds of the first three quarters on a play that starts in the backcourt is recorded as a team miss if it fails, and a make still counts for the shooter.
  • The Board of Governors finalized the change on Sept. 10 after trials at Summer League and smaller July leagues, following support from the Competition Committee.
  • Implementation begins with the 2025–26 season, with the league instructing stat crews on how to classify qualifying heaves so individual percentages are unaffected by misses.
  • SportRadar data show these deep attempts went in about 4% of the time last season, with Stephen Curry making four and Nikola Jokic three under the defined criteria.
  • In other actions, owners approved NBA Cup semifinals moving to higher seeds’ home arenas starting in 2026–27 and shifted proximate-foul decisions on certain out-of-bounds challenges to the replay center beginning this season.
