Nawaz Sharif Presses for NFC Shares for AJK, G-B Ahead of January 24 Polls

He ties a push for formal revenue shares to party mobilisation before the January 24 regional elections.

Overview

  • Sharif urged the federal government to include Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan in NFC allocations, saying Islamabad should take the initiative rather than wait for requests.
  • He said he would raise the demand with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and asked Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal to convey the party’s position, proposing fixed annual amounts for each region.
  • PML-N opened applications for election tickets with a December 31 deadline as Sharif insisted on merit-based selections and warned that those fueling internal disputes would be excluded.
  • He announced a two-day visit to AJK next month and planned meetings in Muzaffarabad, Gilgit or Skardu to review candidates and organise outreach.
  • Sharif cited more than Rs53 billion spent on the Gilgit–Skardu Highway and cautioned that both regions need stronger institutions to absorb larger funds, as recent NFC talks noted their fiscal needs for working-group review.
