Double firepower: Udaygiri, Himgiri to join Navy fleet, what makes these stealth frigates key

Overview

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will preside over the simultaneous commissioning of INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri at the Naval Base in Visakhapatnam.
  • It is the first time two frontline combatants built at different Indian shipyards—MDL in Mumbai and GRSE in Kolkata—will be inducted together.
  • Upon commissioning, both ships will join the Eastern Fleet to expand multi-mission reach across the Indian Ocean Region.
  • The 6,700-tonne Project 17A frigates feature CODOG propulsion, an Integrated Platform Management System, and a layered suite with supersonic surface-to-surface missiles, medium-range SAMs, a 76 mm gun, CIWS, and anti-submarine weapons.
  • Udaygiri is the Warship Design Bureau’s 100th design, with about 75% indigenous content sourced from over 200 MSMEs and the programme supporting thousands of jobs.
