Navy Identifies Student Pilot as Volunteers Find Wreckage From Lake Pontchartrain Training Flight

Investigators are pressing on after the Coast Guard halted its search, with early flight-school data suggesting no mechanical failure as the likely cause remains under review.

Overview

  • Flight instructor Taylor Dickey, 30, and Navy Lt. David Michael Jahn, 30, are presumed dead after a Nov. 24 Cessna Skyhawk disappeared over Lake Pontchartrain.
  • The U.S. Navy confirmed Jahn’s identity with his family’s permission and shared a statement noting he was an expectant father and a civil engineer corps officer based in Gulfport.
  • United Cajun Navy said it located a large section of the aircraft using specialized sonar, divers and K9 teams after the Coast Guard suspended active search operations.
  • Searchers earlier recovered debris, including a seat cushion, and officials reported the aircraft vanished around 6:30 p.m. about four miles north of New Orleans Lakefront Airport with no distress call.
  • The FAA and NTSB have opened investigations, and the flight-school owner cited marginal conditions over water and said preliminary information does not point to a mechanical issue.
