Navy Identifies Missing Sailor as HSC-5 Commander Gabriel Edwards

The identification follows a 102-hour search that covered more than 14,000 square miles and launches a formal Navy probe with no evidence of hostile action.

Overview

  • A MH-60S Seahawk from the carrier USS George H. W. Bush made an emergency water landing on Wednesday, July 1, and three of four crewmembers were rescued while Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards was reported missing.
  • Search teams from two carrier strike groups, multiple destroyers, P-8 Poseidon squadrons and U.S. Air Force aircraft covered over 14,000 square miles across more than 102 hours before the Navy suspended active searches on Sunday, July 5.
  • The Navy formally identified the missing sailor on Tuesday, July 7, as Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards, the commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5 who had more than 2,000 flight hours and had been selected for promotion to captain.
  • The service has opened a formal investigation into the cause of the emergency landing and says there is no indication the incident was caused by hostile action.
  • Edwards’s loss has prompted chaplaincy and mental-health support for the carrier and squadron, requests for family privacy, and renewed attention to carrier helicopter safety and operational risks in the region.
