Navy Activates First Information Warfare Squadron at Norfolk

The 48-month pilot unifies cyber, intelligence, electronic warfare, oceanography, networks, cryptology, meteorology and space operations under one commander to speed decision advantage.

Overview

  • Capt. Jon O’Connor assumed command on Dec. 5 at Naval Station Norfolk as the pilot program formally began.
  • The unit is aligned to Carrier Strike Group 2, led by the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, to deliver integrated information warfare effects.
  • The construct mirrors air wings and destroyer squadrons by consolidating authorities and accountability under a single commander.
  • Personnel are drawn from Navy cyber defense, information operations, training, oceanography and fleet intelligence elements to provide unified support.
  • The pilot, unanimously approved by the Fleet Commanders’ Readiness Council in June, will inform doctrine, with a West Coast squadron planned for 2026.
