Navy Accepts USS Idaho as First Block V Sub Oklahoma Hits Pressure-Hull Milestone

The twin milestones signal a push to lift attack-sub output toward 2.33 boats per year to meet fleet and AUKUS needs.

Overview

  • General Dynamics Electric Boat delivered the future USS Idaho (SSN-799) on Dec. 15, the 26th Virginia-class submarine and the eighth of ten Block IV boats.
  • It is the 14th Virginia-class delivered by Electric Boat and the second of the class handed over to the Navy this year after USS Massachusetts in November.
  • Idaho and its crew will continue Navy-run tests and trials before commissioning expected in spring or early 2026.
  • HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding reported USS Oklahoma (SSN-802) is pressure-hull complete, marking assembly progress on the first Block V submarine.
  • Block V introduces the Virginia Payload Module to expand strike capacity to as many as 40 Tomahawk missiles, while current output of about 1.3 attack boats per year trails a goal of 2.33 plus one Columbia-class annually.
