Overview
- A Special Investigation Team (SIT) arrested two police constables, Sachin Bhalerao and Sanjay Phulkar, for their alleged roles in a drug cartel operated from Malaysia.
- The SIT was formed after an April 15 Anti Narcotics Unit operation that caught two men red-handed with imported drugs in Nerul, Navi Mumbai.
- Authorities seized 1.15 kg of cannabis, 17.19 grams of imported drugs, and packaging equipment worth Rs 2.76 lakh during the investigation.
- The cartel is allegedly linked to Dheeraj Chichkar, believed to be running operations from Malaysia, while his brother Naveen Chichkar remains wanted under a Red Corner Notice issued by the Narcotics Control Bureau.
- The case has also led to tragedy, with Gurunath Chichkar, father of the alleged kingpins, dying by suicide after being repeatedly summoned by investigators.
