Overview
- Sajjad Garibsha Irani, 47, was arrested on October 28 in Pune by Navi Mumbai Crime Branch Unit II and is in police custody until November 6.
- Officers recovered about 1,186 grams of jewellery valued at roughly ₹1.25 crore along with fake police IDs, Aadhaar and PAN cards, and the TVS Apache motorcycle used in the crimes.
- The probe began with a July 31 Kharghar case in which a 68-year-old was duped after the suspect posed as a police officer and used a fake ID to stage a bogus ganja investigation.
- Investigators reviewed 20–25 days of CCTV from Kharghar through Lonavala and Pimpri-Chinchwad to identify motorcycle MH 15 BA 1617 and traced the suspect to Kondhwa, where his wife was detained on October 12 while allegedly trying to sell ornaments.
- Police say Irani is linked to at least 15 impersonation cases across Navi Mumbai and Jalgaon and is a habitual offender with more than 100 prior criminal cases, including entries referencing MCOCA.
