Navi Mumbai International Airport Set to Open Sept. 30 as New Twin Hub for Mumbai

State planners tout fast links via Atal Setu with dedicated buses to cut travel times.

Overview

  • Terminal 1 is declared ready in Phase 1 with capacity for 20 million passengers a year, with a masterplan scaling to four terminals and 90 million by 2032.
  • Operations will start at roughly 8–10 air traffic movements per hour, with a target of about 30 per hour during peaks by 2026 and a temporary ATC tower until a permanent one is built within seven years.
  • The twin-airport strategy pairs NMIA with CSMIA to relieve congestion, supported by road, rail, metro and water links connecting the two facilities over time.
  • Access plans highlight the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link for the fastest route from South Mumbai, the Sion–Panvel corridor and Eastern Freeway, a CIDCO elevated Thane link, Panvel rail hub, proposed metro extensions and MSRTC airport express buses from hubs such as Thane, Dadar, Vashi and Panvel.
  • IndiGo and Akasa Air have committed to launch services, while the airport debuts biometric check-in kiosks and a claimed world’s fastest baggage-claim system, plus 0.8 million tonnes of cargo capacity and India’s largest general aviation terminal.
