Overview
- Terminal 1 is declared ready in Phase 1 with capacity for 20 million passengers a year, with a masterplan scaling to four terminals and 90 million by 2032.
- Operations will start at roughly 8–10 air traffic movements per hour, with a target of about 30 per hour during peaks by 2026 and a temporary ATC tower until a permanent one is built within seven years.
- The twin-airport strategy pairs NMIA with CSMIA to relieve congestion, supported by road, rail, metro and water links connecting the two facilities over time.
- Access plans highlight the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link for the fastest route from South Mumbai, the Sion–Panvel corridor and Eastern Freeway, a CIDCO elevated Thane link, Panvel rail hub, proposed metro extensions and MSRTC airport express buses from hubs such as Thane, Dadar, Vashi and Panvel.
- IndiGo and Akasa Air have committed to launch services, while the airport debuts biometric check-in kiosks and a claimed world’s fastest baggage-claim system, plus 0.8 million tonnes of cargo capacity and India’s largest general aviation terminal.
