Jensy Machado, a naturalized U.S. citizen of Hispanic descent, was detained by ICE agents in Manassas, Virginia, while driving to work.
Machado reported that ICE agents, who were searching for someone tied to his home address, surrounded his vehicle with guns drawn and handcuffed him without asking for ID.
Despite offering to show his Real ID-compliant Virginia driver’s license, Machado was questioned about his immigration status before being released when his citizenship was confirmed.
The incident has led Machado, who voted for Trump in the last election, to reconsider his support for the president, citing concerns over racial profiling in immigration enforcement.
Lawmakers, including Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) and Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), have raised concerns over ICE’s practices, highlighting cases of U.S. citizens being wrongfully detained due to racial profiling.
