Natural Causes Ruled in One HMP Bullingdon Death as Second Inquest Remains Open

A jury concluded that Arthur Johnson’s death stemmed from pre-existing health conditions exacerbated by hip surgery

  • Eldhose John, 38, was found dead by hanging in his cell at HMP Bullingdon on May 27 and his inquest opened on June 12
  • The Prison and Probation Ombudsman is investigating John’s death in custody and a pre-inquest review is scheduled for December 2
  • On June 16 a jury in Oxford Coroner’s Court determined that 87-year-old Arthur Johnson died from natural causes after complications following hip surgery
  • Post-mortem findings attributed Johnson’s death to ischaemic heart disease, aortic valve stenosis and cardiac amyloidosis with diabetes and bronchopneumonia as secondary factors
  • Johnson was six years into a 15-year sentence for child sex offences from the 1960s when he suffered a fall leading to a fractured hip and subsequent operation
