NatPower Unveils £1 Billion Teesside GigaPark Pairing 1GW Battery With Port Electrification

The developer has secured a 1GW grid connection with a 2028 target.

Overview

  • NatPower signed a site agreement with Sembcorp Utilities for a 32-acre plot at Wilton International in Redcar to host the Teesside GigaPark.
  • The privately financed project will start at four hours of storage (1GW/4GWh) with potential expansion to eight hours (8GWh), positioning it among the UK’s longest-duration BESS plans.
  • The design integrates shore power for cold ironing and future vessel charging to decarbonise port operations and nearby industry.
  • NatPower will build and operate the facility, which holds a 400kV, 1GW connection agreement with the National Energy System Operator.
  • The company cites around 200 construction jobs, long-term skilled roles, and an annual £2 million community fund alongside local training and supply-chain opportunities.
