NATO Launches Strong Lineage25 Deployment in Slovakia to Test Rapid Force Escalation

The June drills aim to validate the alliance’s ability to surge 1,900 troops supported by 400 combat vehicles under Spanish command.

Overview

  • More than 1,900 personnel from seven NATO countries are being moved to the Lest training area for the Strong Lineage25 exercise.
  • Spain’s Brigada Galicia VII (BRILAT), led by Brigadier General Alfonso Pardo de Santayana, has served as the Multinational Brigade nucleus since July 2024.
  • Over 7,000 tonnes of gear have been airlifted from Madrid and Vigo and shipped to Koper for onward convoy transport to Slovakia.
  • A NATO Land Component Command certification team will oversee the escalation from Battle Group to Brigade level during the June 6-10 exercise.
  • Training will integrate helicopters, artillery, engineering, air defence and logistical units to assess interoperability under NATO’s Madrid Summit force model.
