NATO Launches 'Centinela Oriental' as Allies Bolster Poland's Air Defenses

Poland accelerates its Escudo del Este program to build a layered anti-drone, anti-missile shield.

Overview

  • Secretary General Mark Rutte and SACEUR Gen. Alexus G. Grynkewich unveiled Centinela Oriental to integrate allied air and missile defenses on the eastern flank following the drone incursions.
  • NATO says the breach represented the largest recent concentration of violations of Alliance airspace, and it has opened Article 4 consultations while assessing whether the action was deliberate.
  • Dutch support includes two Patriot batteries and roughly 300 anti-drone specialists for Poland, with additional fighter contributions pledged by the United Kingdom and France alongside existing AWACS and F-35 deployments.
  • Poland is expanding Escudo del Este with Wisla and Narew sensor networks, Barbara aerostats, more Patriot coverage, increased air policing, and reinforced land defenses including obstacles, artillery positions and tunnels.
  • The response has revived concerns about using high-cost systems against cheap drones, as EU leaders push for scalable counter-drone capabilities, with Ursula von der Leyen calling for a European ‘drone wall’.
