NATO Jet Shoots Down Drone Over Northeastern Latvia

A NATO investigation will examine whether electronic warfare that can redirect unmanned aircraft is increasing risks for air policing and border safety.

Overview

  • NATO fighters scrambled from Lithuania and Estonia and an Italian Eurofighter shot down an unidentified drone over Rugāji in Balvi Municipality on Friday, Aug. 14.
  • Latvian armed forces said the unmanned aircraft entered Latvian airspace because of Russian electromagnetic warfare that can divert drones, a claim NATO has not independently verified.
  • Local officials reported no casualties and said wreckage fell in a wooded area while air-raid alerts briefly covered four eastern municipalities.
  • Finland imposed temporary air and sea restrictions in the eastern Gulf of Finland as a safety precaution and later lifted them after reporting no drone incursions.
  • Allied officials opened a NATO probe to determine the drone's origin, review identification and engagement rules for Baltic Air Policing, and assess how to reduce future cross-border incidents that can endanger civilians and raise escalation risks.
