NATO Intercepts Russian Jets Over Estonia as UK Flies First Eastern Sentry Patrols in Poland

Estonia has requested Article 4 consultations to press a unified NATO response.

Overview

  • Estonia says three Russian MiG-31s entered its airspace near Vaindloo for about 12 minutes, acknowledged Italian F-35 radio calls, and ignored intercept signals with transponders off and no flight plans.
  • NATO scrambled and escorted the aircraft, with Finnish jets tracking the route, and Estonia’s defense minister said the situation did not warrant a shoot-down.
  • Russia’s Defence Ministry denied any breach and claimed the jets stayed over neutral Baltic waters, while Estonia summoned Moscow’s charge d’affaires and called it the fourth such violation this year.
  • Britain deployed two RAF Typhoons for the first Eastern Sentry air-defense sortie over Poland, supported by an RAF Voyager, in a mission the UK said signals NATO airspace will be defended.
  • Poland’s operational command reported scrambling Polish and allied aircraft and raising air defenses to maximum readiness during Russia’s large overnight strikes on Ukraine near NATO borders, later standing down after the attacks subsided.
