Overview

  • Britain, the United States and Norway have flown at least 27 anti-submarine sorties since Sunday, with the UK Ministry of Defence confirming an active operation and declining further details.
  • RAF P-8 Poseidons from Lossiemouth have maintained a near-continuous presence north of Norway, including extended orbits west of the Lofoten Islands and frequent transponder shutdowns near the patrol area.
  • U.S. and Norwegian Poseidons joined from Iceland and Evenes, additional U.S. aircraft reinforced from Sigonella, and Royal Navy frigate HMS Somerset operated in Norwegian waters; no public confirmation of a submarine contact has been provided.
  • Separate video shows a U.S. Navy P-8 intercepted over the Black Sea on Aug. 27, with MLAT data indicating a four-hour mission from Sigonella that stayed more than 50 nautical miles from Russian airspace.
  • The footage offered a rare view of the P-8’s AN/APS-154 Advanced Airborne Sensor deployed, as NORAD separately reported four Il-20 reconnaissance flights near Alaska over the past week that remained in international airspace.
