Joey Gallo, a veteran slugger known for his power hitting but high strikeout rate, has signed a one-year deal with the Washington Nationals for $5 million, with an additional $1 million in performance bonuses.
Gallo, who has played for the Texas Rangers, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Minnesota Twins, has a career batting average of .197 with 198 home runs and 426 RBIs in 3,143 plate appearances.
Despite his low batting average, Gallo is valued for his power at the plate and his ability to draw walks, with a 14.5% walk rate ranking 13th among players with 300+ plate appearances last season.
The Nationals, who finished last in the National League East with a 71-91 record last season, are in the midst of a rebuild and are hoping Gallo can provide some much-needed power to their lineup.
If Gallo performs well, the Nationals could potentially trade him for prospects at the deadline, continuing their aggressive rebuild. If his performance declines, they're only $5 million out of pocket.
