National Winter Bird Count Runs January 9–11 as NABU and LBV Urge Participation

A cold snap could draw more birds to feeders, strengthening data used to track urban populations and disease trends.

Overview

  • Volunteers are asked to observe birds for one hour from a window, garden or park during the January 9–11 count.
  • Sightings can be submitted via www.stundederwintervoegel.de or the Nabu Vogelwelt app, with reports accepted until January 19.
  • Participants should record for each species the highest number of individuals seen simultaneously during their hour.
  • LBV München will lead a guided session in the Englischer Garten on Friday at 14:00 at the Chinesischer Turm stop, with online pre-registration required.
  • NABU highlights 2025 Brandenburg results of 4,883 participants and 122,231 birds, noting a 32% drop in blackbirds likely linked to the Usutu virus.
