National Weather Service Confirms Two Tornadoes Struck Kansas City Area

Limited damage in the stadium-area twister led survey crews to assign an EF-Unknown rating

Portable toilets and portable barriers at Kauffman Stadium were toppled by a severe, tornado-warned thunderstorm that moved through Kansas City on Tuesday. The National Weather Service determined a short-lived tornado touched down nearby.

Overview

  • On June 3 two tornadoes touched down in the Kansas City area, one near the Truman Sports Complex at 2:25 p.m. and a second in Independence at 2:35 p.m.
  • National Weather Service survey crews assigned the stadium-area tornado an EF-Unknown rating after its limited impact prevented wind-speed estimation.
  • The Independence twister carved a 3.75-mile path up to 50 yards wide, produced estimated peak winds of 100 mph and snapped or uprooted multiple healthy trees for an EF-1 classification.
  • The storm overturned portable toilets, temporary barriers and a light pole in the Truman Sports Complex parking area, while heavier winds caused more extensive tree damage in Independence.
  • No events were underway at Kauffman Stadium, allowing Royals employees and FanDuel crews to shelter safely inside stadium tunnels and avoid equipment losses.
