National Trust Reports 39% Jump in Youth Members as Overall Membership Slips

Cost pressures are pushing more visitors to pay per visit rather than keep memberships.

Overview

  • More than 40,000 people aged 18 to 25 joined between March 2024 and February 2025, a 39% year-on-year rise.
  • Early 2025 data show youth membership up a further 16% from March through July.
  • Total membership edged down to 5.35 million from 5.38 million, while paying visitors to sites rose 5% across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • A young person’s membership costs £4 a month (£48 a year), with new direct-debit joiners able to bring a friend free on one visit.
  • The Trust points to Public First research on strong emotional ties to heritage, acknowledges cost and access barriers highlighted by Historic Houses, and promotes its 2022 Regeneration youth network.
