National Trust Declares Radon Levels Safe at Chastleton House After Remedial Works

A targeted barrier and vent system was installed to curb radon entering the listed property.

Overview

  • The National Trust said radon at staff accommodation in Chastleton’s Stableyard is now within safe, normal limits following completed works.
  • Post-remediation testing has been carried out and the Trust says it will continue periodic checks to ensure levels remain low.
  • An inspection previously found Ostlers Cottage exceeded the World Health Organization’s recommended maximum for indoor radon.
  • Planned measures included a radon barrier beneath the suspended living-room floor and an external tile vent to extract gas.
  • The Trust applied to West Oxfordshire District Council for permission to undertake the mitigation at the site, which featured in the BBC’s Wolf Hall.
