National Parks Keep Open-Air Access During Shutdown as Services Scale Back

Skeleton staffing raises safety risks, advocates warn.

Overview

  • Interior’s contingency plan leaves roads, trails, lookouts and outdoor memorials accessible while closing visitor centers, caves, indoor museums and many restrooms.
  • Emergency and rescue operations remain only partially staffed, with the plan acknowledging crews could be quickly overwhelmed by incidents.
  • Recreation.gov cautions it may not accept future reservations and says existing bookings could be canceled with or without email notice.
  • Many concessionaire-run hotels, restaurants and shops are operating and honoring reservations, including Xanterra in Yellowstone and Aramark properties in Yosemite.
  • The Pacific Crest Trail Association has halted all maintenance projects due to agency furloughs, and Washington Trails Association is steering hikers toward state and local parks.
