National Lok Adalat Delivers Big Disposals Across India as Token and Website Limits Draw Complaints

The one-day drive offered fine relief on minor offences while revealing the need for stronger digital and on-site capacity.

Overview

  • Jammu & Kashmir reported 2,39,533 cases settled out of 3,06,851 taken up, with over Rs 50 crore in settlements and compensation, according to the J&K Legal Services Authority.
  • Surat district said 95,369 of 97,331 cases were resolved in a day with settlements totaling about Rs 126.6 crore, including thousands of cheque-bounce, e-challan and pre-litigation matters.
  • Delhi logged about 1.8 lakh challan and notice downloads before the sittings, capped at 60,000 per day, as users reported server errors and quickly exhausted daily quotas.
  • Crowds and caps constrained access at some local centres, including Pune’s Yerawada branch where only about 200 tokens were issued for the day, prompting complaints of poor planning and calls for online payment options.
  • Lok Adalat benches focused on compoundable matters such as minor traffic violations, Section 138 cheque cases, MACT and consumer disputes, with many motorists receiving reduced penalties and, in some reported instances, waivers up to 75%.
