National Guardsman Charged in Alleged Russia Scheme Involving Helicopter Radio, Fort Riley Photos

Prosecutors cite an undercover operation that captured efforts to ship a controlled helicopter radio to Russia via Romania, alongside the sharing of Fort Riley images.

Overview

  • Canyon Anthony Amarys, 28, was arrested Oct. 28 and made his initial appearance Oct. 30 in the District of Kansas after an indictment for attempting to violate the Export Control Reform Act.
  • He pleaded not guilty, and a court hearing is set for Nov. 18, according to new reporting.
  • The indictment says Amarys met in February with someone he believed was a Russian intelligence agent at an Overland Park, Kansas, hotel and signed a one-page agreement confirming a covert relationship.
  • In March, he bought a Garmin GTR-205 helicopter radio, took it to a USPS facility in Junction City for shipment to Romania with the understanding it would be diverted to Russia, and investigators later seized the device in a court-authorized search.
  • Prosecutors allege he photographed a Fort Riley installation he believed contained sensitive technology and sent the image to an undercover agent; the FBI Kansas City office leads a multiagency probe, and the charge carries up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine if convicted.
