National Guard Troops Deployed to LA Join Riverside County Marijuana Farm Raid

California’s attorney general is asking a federal court to bar Guard deployments beyond Los Angeles in the latest test of presidential authority

Service members with the California Army National Guard, part of a deployment by President Donald Trump to Los Angeles in response to the protests against Federal immigration raids, are seen at Joint Forces Training Base Los Alamitos in Los Alamitos on June 20, 2025.

Overview

  • Roughly 315 Guard members originally sent to Los Angeles assisted the DEA on June 18 in executing a search warrant across a 787-acre marijuana operation near Thermal
  • More than 500 personnel from federal agencies including ICE, CBP, FBI, ATF, the U.S. Marshals Service and the IRS took part in the desert farm raid under 112°F conditions
  • The operation led to the detention of between 70 and 75 undocumented workers and the arrest of a U.S. citizen for impeding law enforcement
  • A 9th Circuit ruling upheld the president’s June 7 order to federalize Guard troops in Los Angeles but did not explicitly authorize missions beyond city limits
  • Rob Bonta’s office has requested further court disclosures on Guard deployments and evidence of ongoing threats to federal personnel in Los Angeles to justify the mission’s continuation
