National Assembly Sets Opposition Leader Count for Jan. 14 as Speaker Opens Nominations

The process resumes after months of legal delays following Omar Ayub’s disqualification.

Overview

  • Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq invited signed nominations by 3pm on Jan. 13 under Rule 39 and scheduled verification and a headcount for Jan. 14.
  • Opposition whip Aamir Dogar said 76 MNAs have backed Mahmood Khan Achakzai and confirmed the list would be submitted in line with the speaker’s instructions.
  • According to Dunya News citing sources, the government and opposition have agreed on Achakzai as the sole candidate, with notification to follow required formalities.
  • The PPP walked out after alleging an ordinance was issued without President Asif Ali Zardari’s assent, a claim the law minister said appeared to stem from misinformation as he pledged to report back.
  • Following the walkout, a lack of quorum forced the speaker to adjourn the National Assembly sitting until Tuesday.
