Jimmy Carter Honored with State Funeral at Washington National Cathedral

The 39th president, who passed away at 100, is remembered for his humanitarian legacy as leaders and citizens pay tribute during a national day of mourning.

All five living U.S. presidents, including President Biden and President-elect Trump, attended the state funeral at the Washington National Cathedral, where Biden delivered the eulogy.
The day was declared a national day of mourning by President Biden, with federal offices and the stock market closed, and flags flown at half-staff for 30 days following Carter's death on December 29, 2024.
Carter's remains lay in state at the U.S. Capitol earlier in the week, allowing the public to pay their respects before the official funeral service.
Following the D.C. service, Carter's body will return to his hometown of Plains, Georgia, for a private burial next to his late wife, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away in 2023.
Jimmy Carter, remembered for his post-presidency humanitarian work and a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, was the first U.S. president to live to 100 years old.
