- NASCAR announced the procedure change Thursday, Aug. 6, and put it into effect immediately for the Iowa Speedway weekend and the rest of the 2026 national series schedule.
- Under the new rule a natural caution that comes with 10 or fewer laps left in Stage 1 or Stage 2 will immediately end that stage and award stage points without waiting for a scheduled break.
- Officials will use electronic scoring loops and video replay to set the top-10 stage order when a stage ends under a late caution, then open pit road and show the leader the yellow and green-and-white checkered flags when they return to the start/finish line.
- Many Cup drivers praised the change as more fan-friendly and a way to cut long yellow-flag periods, while some drivers and crew chiefs warned it will create new strategic uncertainty about pit windows and fuel plans.
- NASCAR says it will monitor how the tweak affects race flow and strategy and may refine the procedure after seeing its impact over the remainder of the season.
