Yarborough won the Daytona 500 four times and the Southern 500 five times, and his 83 Cup Series victories tie him for sixth on NASCAR's all-time wins list.
He was the first driver to win three consecutive Cup titles, a feat only matched by Jimmie Johnson in 2008.
Yarborough's most famous moment was the 1979 Daytona 500, where he and Donnie Allison crashed on the final lap and ended up in a fistfight, a moment that transformed NASCAR from a niche sport in the South to a national attraction.
After retiring from racing, Yarborough opened a used car dealership in South Carolina and served on the Florence County Council.
