NASA Formalizes Moon Base Program and Plans Sustained Lunar Presence by 2032

The agency is redirecting resources from the Lunar Gateway to surface infrastructure and will deploy drones at the lunar South Pole to mark an operational perimeter that raises strategic competition with China.

  • NASA publicly announced the Moon Base program on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, unveiling three precursor missions called Moon Base I, II and III that are slated to fly in 2026 to deliver equipment, test landing safety and study surface performance.
