Overview

  • NASA scientists have found a way to keep the Voyager 2 probe functioning for 3 more years despite it traveling 12 billion miles from Earth.
  • Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 were launched in 1977 to study the outer solar system and have far outlived their original 5-year mission plan.
  • The probes have returned groundbreaking images and data from Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and their moons.
  • Though some instruments have malfunctioned, NASA may apply the same power hack used for Voyager 2 to extend Voyager 1's mission.
  • After their instruments are shut down, the Voyager probes will continue drifting into interstellar space, each carrying a golden record containing information about humanity.
