NASA Delays ISS Spacewalk Hours Before Start Over Crew Medical Concern

Overview

  • The Jan. 8 spacewalk was postponed just hours before hatch opening after a medical issue arose aboard the station on Jan. 7.
  • NASA withheld the crew member’s identity and details for privacy, saying only that the situation is stable.
  • Mike Fincke and Zena Cardman had been assigned to prepare the 2A power channel for the final iROSA installation and to swab exterior sites for a microorganism study.
  • The delay creates uncertainty for completing one or both planned EVAs before visiting vehicles depart, including CRS-33 Dragon on Jan. 21 and Japan’s HTV-X on Jan. 27–28.
  • The outing would have been Cardman’s first spacewalk and could have marked Fincke’s 10th.
