NASA Astronaut Suni Williams Sets Record for Most Spacewalk Hours by a Woman

Williams has accumulated over 62 hours across nine spacewalks, surpassing the previous record set in 2017, while continuing her extended mission aboard the ISS.

  • Suni Williams conducted her ninth career spacewalk on Thursday, bringing her total time spent in spacewalks to 62 hours and 6 minutes, a record for any woman in history.
  • The previous record of 60 hours and 21 minutes was held by former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, who completed 10 spacewalks in her career.
  • Williams and fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore, originally aboard the Boeing Starliner spacecraft, have been on an extended stay at the International Space Station due to technical issues with the Starliner.
  • The astronauts are now scheduled to return to Earth in late March aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule after completing their mission and awaiting the arrival of the Crew-10 team.
  • During their extended mission, Williams and Wilmore have focused on scientific research, space station maintenance, and spacewalks, while also reflecting on the unique perspective of Earth from orbit.
