NAS Seizes 674 Kg of Preserves in Bologna Over Botulism Risk

The operation is part of a stepped-up national food-safety campaign launched after recent botulism cases in Calabria and Sardinia.

Overview

  • Local health authorities ordered the immediate suspension of production, storage and trade at the unnamed agricultural company following the inspection.
  • Inspectors found pasteurization procedures described as totally inadequate, creating a concrete risk of botulinum toxin development in the products.
  • Checks uncovered reused and in some cases still dirty glass jars, numerous unlabeled containers, and stock dating to 2010, 2012 and 2018.
  • Processing and storage areas were in poor hygienic condition with dust, cobwebs and guano, and tomato passata was being cooked in a rusted copper cauldron heated with discarded pallet wood.
  • The seized stock was valued at more than €15,000, administrative fines totaled €4,500, and the action falls under the 'Estate Tranquilla 2025' inspection campaign.
