Namibian Cheetah Nabha Dies of Injuries at Kuno National Park

The loss highlights the need for vigilant veterinary oversight to help stabilize India’s newly established African cheetah population.

  • Officials report Nabha suffered fractures to her left ulna and fibula in a hunting attempt within her soft release enclosure and died after a week of treatment; a postmortem is awaited.
  • Her death brings Kuno’s total to 26 cheetahs (nine adults and 17 cubs), with all remaining individuals described as healthy.
  • Sixteen cheetahs have transitioned to free-range status at Kuno, where they regularly hunt and coexist with other predators.
  • Two male cheetahs moved to Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary in April 2025 are thriving under ongoing monitoring.
  • Since September 2022, Project Cheetah has introduced 20 African cheetahs and responded to earlier mortality with improved veterinary care, enclosure upgrades, and preventive treatments.
