Namibia Sends 500+ Troops and Helicopters to Contain Etosha Wildfire That Burned a Third of the Park

Officials suspect charcoal production on bordering farms ignited the blaze.

Overview

  • Authorities estimate about 775,163 hectares inside Etosha have burned, roughly 34% of the park, with a further 171,098 hectares affected outside.
  • The prime minister said Monday that fires inside and outside the park are contained, following earlier reports of active fronts in the Omusati region.
  • More than 500 to 540 soldiers, two helicopters and water tankers are reinforcing firefighters, police, forestry teams and local volunteers.
  • At least nine antelope deaths are confirmed, wider wildlife losses are under assessment, and no human casualties have been reported.
  • The blaze spread into communal areas in Omusati and Oshana, damaging grazing lands as some tourist routes were closed and visitors were urged to use caution.
