Nalco Unveils Rs 30,000-Crore Plan for New Smelter and 1,080 MW Power Plant in Odisha

The state-owned producer is pursuing JV partners with a debt–internal funding mix to lift output toward Maharatna eligibility by 2030.

Overview

  • The capex will be executed over the next four to five years, with completion targeted by 2030 to expand mining, refining and smelting capacity.
  • About Rs 18,000 crore is earmarked for the new aluminium smelter and roughly Rs 12,000 crore for the coal-based power project.
  • Nalco will build a 1,080 MW captive thermal plant in Angul, Odisha for its smelter, has appointed a consultant to prepare the DPR, and is negotiating potential JV terms with Coal India and NTPC.
  • A new bauxite mine is planned by June 2026 as the company aims to more than double smelting output from 460,000 tonnes per year to over 960,000 tonnes.
  • Funding will combine debt and internal accruals, with parallel efforts to secure inputs and future growth through lithium opportunities via KABIL in Argentina and prospective equity in Australian assets.
